JAMES BAKER

Aspire Academy / LTAD Network

James is currently the Head of National Talent Identification for Olympic Sports, as well as a Senior Strength & Conditioning Coach and Performance Support Lead for Athletics at the Aspire Academy in Qatar. He brings a unique blend of skills and experience as a S&C coach, PE teacher, sport scientist and researcher. James is currently pursuing a PhD investigating the impact of growth and maturation in youth track and field. In 2020, he received ASCA’s Senior Research Award at their annual conference. Prior to arriving in Doha, James established a number of school based LTAD programmes in the UK, and in 2017 he was awarded the UKSCA’s S&C Coach of the Year for Youth Sport for his work at St. Peter’s R.C. High School.

Talk Overview – An Integrated Approach to Physical Development for Rugby

In this talk, James will share his approach to the development of key physical qualities with young athletes and how this can be integrated into coaching sessions when the number of sessions or time available is limited. James will cover:

  • An introduction to the newly developed ‘Child To Champion LTAD Model’
  • Using the RAMP warm up system to address key physical qualities
  • How to incorporate and progress those physical qualities across an annual plan
  • How physical development can be integrated into the weekly and session plans in typical youth rugby environments (e.g. clubs and schools) where time is often limited

MIKE YOUNG

Athletic Lab / LTAD Network

Dr. Mike Young is the Director of Performance at Athletic Lab Sports Performance Training Center and the Performance Director for the North Carolina Courage and the North Carolina FC professional football clubs. In the sport of track & field Mike was on the coaching staff that won 6 team NCAA championships at LSU, has coached 4 USA Track & Field National Champions, and has coached Olympic and World Championship competitors in a half dozen events. Outside of track & field, Young has served as the sport coach for athletes who have competed internationally in weightlifting, skeleton, and bobsleigh. In team sports, Young has been the High Performance Director for 4 professional football clubs, has trained Super Bowl and World Series champions and has consulted for some of the top sports teams in the world including 4 World Cup Rugby teams and 3 Premier League football clubs.

Talk Overview 

Speed is one of the most important aspects of all sports. All athletes, regardless of sport, can benefit from being faster. But developing speed with team sport athletes sometimes isn’t as simple as with Track & Field athletes. Coach Young will address how to best develop speed under the unique demands of the team sport setting.

Mike will cover:
  • The factors that impact speed
  • The 2 key factors for an effective speed development session
  • How to coach springing mechanics in a team setting
  • How to incorporate jumping, changes of direction, the ball,
  • Considerations for volume, frequency, recovery, placement relative to games, and more

KEV MANNION

Q&A Session: Experiences and changes in the Academy Rugby landscape over the last decade.

Head of Academy S&C at Sale Sharks. Kev has been fortunate enough to work at some of the UK’s top sporting organisations with some great players over close to 20 years as both a professional athlete and S&C coach. Kev has previously worked at Gloucester Rugby, Wigan Warriors, British Tennis and Leicester Tigers.

Session Overview:

During this session we will be discussing Kev’s experience over the last decade working in some of the biggest Academy Rugby setups. Kev will be sharing how the landscape has changed for parents, players and coaches; what it takes to be successful and progress through the Academy pathway and the physical demands of the modern game and what training young players need to do to meet them. This promises to be an incredibly insightful session with one of the best S&C coaches in the business when it comes to producing players that are capable of making the step up to the professional game.

ED ARCHER

Panel Discussion with James Bailey, Andy Gomarsall & Nick Wood: Long-term athletic development from the ex-players perspective.

The theme of this panel discussion is LTAD from the ex-players perspective. Ed will be hosting the session and exploring a range of areas related to Andy, James & Nick’s career journeys and development.

This will include:

  • The most valuable training strategies for a long and successful career in Rugby
  • Lifestyle factors outside/alongside Rugby that helped keep them motivated and enthused about the sport.
  • Their favourite and least favourite aspects of physical preparation.
  • The qualities they appreciate in S&C coaches
  • Advice for coaches on how to effectively develop players
  • Reflections on their development through adolescence.
  • Transitioning to a successful career after professional rugby – advice for parents, coaches and athletes.

TOM GREEN

Tom Green is the Head of Athletic Development at St Peters RC High School.

Tom holds an undergraduate and Masters degree in Strength and Conditioning and is a qualified teacher. Tom has worked in several youth S&C positions and is currently working with the UKSCA and consulting with the Department of Education for better physical activity provision.

STUART CRABB

Director of Sport / Head of Physical Education at St. Peter’s RC High School as well as an RFU Coach Educator.

Stuart is highly experienced coach with a track record of developing players, teachers and coaches. During his 20+ years at St. Peter’s, he has been involved in the development of many players that have gone on to have successful and enjoyable playing careers at both an amateur, semi-professional and professional level.
Overview:

This CPD will provide an overview of the impact of COVID-19 on the school curriculum. More specifically, we will discuss the current state of students and the interventions we have put in place to guide students through our physical activity curriculum. Finally, we will address the impact on our senior rugby team, taking you through a “week” at St Peters RC High School.
